About Maria Bakht, Psy.D.

Dr. Maria Bakht is delighted to be an active member of Discovery Counseling Associates. She completed her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the Arizona School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University in Phoenix, Arizona, which is accredited by the American Psychological Association. She is a Washington State licensed psychologist (PY00003664).

Her areas of clinical work experience and interests include posttraumatic stress disorder, personal self exploration, identity issues, relationship issues, sexual trauma, abuse, depression, bipolar disorder, multicultural issues, chronic pain and fatigue, anxiety, internet addiction, pornography (for both men and women), Asperger's disorder, alcohol and substance abuse, social anxiety, communication and organizational health to name a few. She works with adolescents and adults.

Maria's approach to therapy is integrative, encompassing physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual health tailoring sessions to meet individual needs. Maria conducts individual, couples, and group psychotherapy, and often serves as a consultant for multicultural issues. She further provides psychological evaluations for asylum seekers.

Dr. Maria is experienced working with various ethnic and international populations from over 30 countries. Prior to coming to Washington, Maria completed a postdoctoral psychology fellowship at the Center for Victims of Torture in Minneapolis, MN. She completed an APA accredited predoctoral psychology internship at Grand Valley State University's Counseling and Career Development Center in Allendale, MI. While in Arizona, Maria provided substance abuse counseling and also worked with refugees at the International Rescue Committee in Phoenix.

Dr. Maria most recently worked at Western Washington University's Counseling Center in Bellingham, WA. Maria remains an active speaker and workshop presenter at conferences and churches domestically and internationally on a number of topics. Maria loves to connect with friends, cook Middle Eastern delights, and enjoys exploring new destinations, even if it is just the new store around the corner! Others often comment about catching Maria singing lines from musicals in the hallway or how she can be directionally challenged when driving around Bellingham.
